Division of Neuropsychology

Background

The Division of Neuropsychology (DoN) was formed in conjunction with the International Neuropsychology Society (INS) in July 2005. This group in general meets bi-monthly in order to discuss and develop issues relevant to Neuropsychology in Ireland.  The SIGN committee (outlined below) meets monthly with support from the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) to develop clinical and policy issues of relevance and it is particularly committed to developing policies and guidelines for the practice and advancement of Clinical Neuropsychology nationally.

Aims

Developing and informing national standards and policy regarding Neuropsychology in Ireland.
• Promoting evidence-based practice in clinical neuropsychological research.
• The sharing and dissemination of information, experience and resources.
• Developing a support network for all psychologists working within or akin to Neuropsychology.
• Highlighting the needs, and advocating on behalf neurological and neuropsychological patient populations.

Membership Information

Membership of the Division of Neuropsychology is open to all current PSI graduate members.

Membership entitles psychologists to attendance at our regular education and training events and to regular sharing and dissemination of information via email.

There are two levels of membership within the Division of Neuropsychology – Full Membership and Affiliate Membership. Because of the disparate nature of the discipline of Neuropsychology a further distinction is made based on eligibility for practitioner status in Clinical Neuropsychology.

Full Member (Ordinary Status):

All graduate members of the Society who have obtained a post-graduate degree of at least Master’s level in which the area of neuropsychology/neuroscience was the primary topic.  

Full Member (Practitioner Status):

All graduate members of the Society deemed eligible for Full Membership (Practitioner Status) as outlined below.

Affiliate Member:

  1. Graduate members of the Society pursuing a post-graduate training course leading to eligibility for Full Membership.

Or

  1. Graduate members of the Society who are at the time of application working in the area of Neuropsychology or in the disciplines of Neuroscience, but who do not otherwise meet the criteria for Full Membership.

Or

  1. Any other graduate member of the Society with an interest in the science/practice of Neuropsychology.



Full Membership (Practitioner Status)

In order to obtain/qualify for Full Membership (Practitioner Status) the following are required:

1.         Postgraduate qualification in Clinical Psychology accredited by PSI plus 24 months full-time clinically relevant experience in Clinical Neuropsychology that has been supervised by a Senior Clinical Neuropsychologist or the equivalent thereof.  Such supervisor should be eligible for Full Membership (Practitioner Status). (This provision will be open for a limited time, which will be in part determined by the availability of accredited programmes nationally).

Or

2.         Post graduate qualification/degree and/or accredited professional training in Clinical Neuropsychology, as recognised by the Division of Neuropsychology, together with at least 2 years relevant experience in Clinical Neuropsychology that has been supervised by a Senior Clinical Neuropsychologist or the equivalent thereof. This supervisor should be eligible for Full Membership (Practitioner Status).

Or

3.         An appropriate post-graduate qualification in an area directly relevant to Clinical Neuropsychology, as determined by the Division of Neuropsychology Committee. This provision will be open for a limited time, which will be in part determined by the availability of accredited programmes nationally.

Or

4.         Full Membership (Practitioner Status) will be granted to those who, at the time of Division of Neuropsychology formation, do not meet the criteria for Full Membership (Practitioner Status) as outlined in 1 and 2 above, but who have at least two years full-time relevant work experience specifically in the area of Clinical Neuropsychology.  (This provision is only open to those who are  employed at the time of application in the position of Clinical Neuropsychologist in a recognised HSE or equivalent hospital/institution or who can   demonstrate that they are working in the capacity of a Clinical Neuropsychologist (albeit with a different job title), at the time of Division of Neuropsychology formation. Application for membership under this provision must be made within one year of Division formation).

Note 1: Affiliate membership does not confer automatic eligibility for future full membership.
