Division of Forensic Psychology

Background

The Special Interest Group in Forensic Psychology held its first meeting in March 2004. Subsequently, the Division of Forensic Psychology came into being with the acceptance of the motion presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Psychological Society of Ireland on the 26th of May 2007 which read: 'That this meeting endorses the recommendation of Council to establish a Division of Forensic Psychology in the Society.' The motion was passed unanimously.
The Division of Forensic Psychology continues to meet regularly to discuss issues relating to the work of Forensic Psychologists and Psychologists in the Criminal Justice System and Health Service. The Division of Forensic Psychology has links with the Forensic Faculty of the Division of Clinical Psychology of the British Psychological Society and the Forensic Division of the British Psychological Society. Such relationships are important to members working in this field and to support psychologists to practice professionally in this area of work in Ireland/UK and overseas.

Aims

The aims of the Division of Forensic Psychology are as follows:

(I) To enhance the recognition of forensic psychology in Ireland as a distinct specialism of psychology.

(II) To promote public awareness of the nature, aims and practical applications of forensic psychology for the benefit of individuals and organisations.

(III) To develop a career pathway in forensic psychology for students to follow.

(IV) To encourage links with psychologists in other jurisdictions.

(V) To enhance the recognition of the psychological aspects of Forensic and illness.

(VI) To promote psychological study in all forensic fields.
