On Thursday the 23rd Match 2006, the inaugural meeting of the PSI
Special Interest Group on Dying and Bereavement. The meeting was held
at the
offices
of The
Irish
Hospice
Foundation. Twenty Psychologists attended.
Susan Delaney, Bereavement Services Manager, Irish Hospice Foundation
welcomed attendees and read an e-mail of congratulations from Dr
James Brennan of the British Psychological Society Special Interest
Group for Oncology and Palliative Care. Dr Brennan looked forward
to future collaborations between the two groups.
Susan Delaney welcomed Prof Sheila Payne, University of Sheffield,
who gave a comprehensive talk on the role(s) for psychology in dying,
death and bereavement - based on the fundamental acknowledgement that
loss was a key issue with strong implications for research, theories,
education and intervention. Using examples from her research and from
policy documents such as ‘Guidelines for improving supportive
and palliative care for adults with cancer’ Prof Payne provided
a rich context for the ongoing work of the SIG.
